With the wheelchair into the cathedral crypt
SPEYER – Wheelchair users can now even explore the most important areas of Speyer Cathedral. A tracked stair climber will help them. The electronic device, which is only operated with the help of the cathedral’s sacristans, brings handicapped visitors to the transept as well as the crypt, the grave and the Afra chapel. “I am delighted that we have taken a step forward in our goal of being as barrier-free as possible,” emphasised Domkustos Peter Schappert. The stair caterpillar, which cost around 7000 euros, was financed with the support of the European Foundation Kaiserdom zu Speyer. Representatives of heritage conservation were involved in the decision.
